Water leak in Liberty repaired late Thursday afternoon

UPDATE: Water main repairs are complete and will take several hours for the water system to pressure up.

ORIGINAL STORY: As of 2:30 p.m. Thanksgiving, water is still out in portions of Liberty, a day after contractors broke a six-inch water main along Monta and Bowie streets near the expansion of San Jacinto Elementary School.

Mark Reed, supervisor for the City of Liberty’s Public Works Department, said repairs have been hampered because the location of the water break is near the city’s southside water tower. Before repairs could be made, water had to be drained from the water tower to relieve pressure on the line.

“We are just now getting to the point where we can fix the break,” Reed said. “We are looking at taking out the section of pipe that was broken by the contractors and replacing it entirely.”

Reed commended the members of the Public Works Department for their tireless work to make the repairs.

“We’ve been out here all night,” Reed said.

Reed acknowledged that the timing of water break is unfortunate as many were preparing their holiday meals when water was cut off.

Water should be restored later in the afternoon or early evening if repairs go as planned, Reed said.
