Man killed in auto-ped accident near Dayton prison

Authorities say a 25-year-old man was killed Tuesday night around 9:15 p.m. when he was struck by a truck near the 321 Food Mart in the 7600 block of SH 321 in Dayton.

According to Sgt. Rob Willoughby, a spokesperson for the Texas Department of Public Safety, the deceased man was traveling southbound in a 2008 Ford Escape when, for some unknown reason, he got out of his vehicle and kneeled in the northbound lane of traffic.

A northbound 2015 GMC Terrain, driven by John Hendricks, 31, of Cleveland, hit the man as he was knelt down in the roadway.

“It appears he did not see the subject in the road. The driver stayed behind to wait for authorities to arrive,” Willoughby said.

Pct. 4 Justice of the Peace Larry Wilburn made the pronouncement of death at the scene and ordered an autopsy. While the accident investigation is still pending, alcohol is not believed to be a factor.

The name of the deceased person is being withheld pending the notification of his next of kin.

Dayton Police Department and Dayton Fire Department assisted DPS with the crash scene.
