LCSO: Prisoner found unresponsive in cell appears to have died of natural causes

An autopsy performed on Monday in Beaumont reportedly has determined that 58-year-old Joseph Daniel Edwards, of Dayton, died of natural cases. He was found unresponsive in his cell at the Liberty County Jail on Thursday, Dec. 12.

Edwards reportedly suffered a heart attack and had other health conditions that led to his premature passing.

“This, of course, shows his death was of natural causes,” said Capt. Ken DeFoor, spokesperson for the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, which oversees operation of the county jail.

Edwards was found lying on the floor of his cell around 8 p.m. Thursday during a routine bed check. An ambulance was immediately called and the inmate was rushed to Liberty-Dayton Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead a short time later despite life-saving efforts in the emergency room.

The incident was investigated by the Texas Rangers with the cooperation of the Sheriff’s Office.

Edwards was in jail following his arrest on July 22, 2019, on a charge of Injury to a Child/Elderly or Disabled Person.
