Liberty County will not be imposing mandatory mask requirements for businesses despite a rise in the number of COVID-19 cases. However, people are encouraged to take precautions to protect themselves and others by practicing good hygiene, wearing masks if they choose and practicing social distancing.
Each day Liberty County Judge Jay Knight says that people have to take responsibility for their own decisions, including wearing a mask.
“That will be your personal choice. We believe that everyone has rights to make those choices,” Knight said.
When asked if he foresees more government-imposed lockdowns in the future, Knight said the state cannot afford to keep businesses closed.
“It’s not political. We just can’t afford to. We have to get the economy up and running, and do the best we can to keep people safe,” he said.
He believes that a rise in the number of COVID-19 cases is a combination of people getting lax in their hygiene and precautions and an increase in testing sites throughout the county.
As of Thursday afternoon, Liberty County is confirmed to have 209 COVID-19 cases, though most have recovered or are recovering at home. Of the 209, three people have died.

For anyone interested in a COVID-19 test, there are a couple of opportunities in Cleveland. Emergency Hospital Systems, which operates Cleveland Emergency Hospital and Texas Emergency Hospital, both in Cleveland, is hosting a drive-through testing center this week and next week. The hours and dates of operation are June 24-26 and June 29-July 3, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, at the employee parking lot on the corner of W. Barnett and E. Crockett streets in Cleveland.
This testing is open to anyone. Bring your insurance information and a driver’s license or identification card. For those without insurance, the test is $55. So the people taking the test shouldn’t have to pay for it? Where does the money for the test come from then? Does the county pay for it? Thank you for the information Judge Knight but a couple of things come to mind.
1. When the cases are posted is say they are either North or South Liberty. Many people have been asking for some more exact.when possible. Example; Cleveland, Plumb Grove, Hardin, Liberty, Dayton.
2. When someone is hospitalize I do not see that data on your tracking and if hospitalized is that reflected as Liberty county or as the Houston trauma area.
3. Listening to Governor Abbott’s press conference he seemed to indicate that if the trends continued to go up there may be more need to implement a more stringent require mask and social distancing. He stated that in a conversation with a restaurant owner who did not want to implement wearing mask and social distancing, “If we don’t do these things and turn the trends around we may lose some of the progress in opening Texas. What is worse social distancing and mask or have to back up on opening Texas.” The restaurant had another prescriptive after that. Governor I apologize if I did not word it exactly as stated by you but hope it was close.

Wearing a mask in public is a personal choice, so you can spread the virus all over town if you would like but don’t be smoking in public because i don’t want to breath your smoke. I cant afford to shut business down because that would mean people would get unemployment benefits.
What good is testing when the politicians are against masks. They certainly won’t approve of forceful quarantining of the sick. You can bet they won’t shoot those who refuse to be quarantined and are spreaders.
Two items: (1) Our County Judge isn’t very effective with the general populace. He panders to a small group of friends. No concern for the elderly what-so-ever. The amount of “NO COMMUNICATION” during this pandemic is monumental. Just wish he would think of the other 95% of Liberty citizens. Wish he was just half as engaged as the Sheriff. (2) Hand-outs and freebees are not the way I was raised, but with the economics of today, it has become necessary to accept some charity. This hurts me terrible but necessary. It would be nice if Liberty Citizens could count on the COUNTY BOSS to assist in directing citizens to these necessary items.
That is all I have on my mind at this time.
