Possible dragging death under investigation in north Liberty County neighborhood

Ronnie Denton with the State Fire Marshal's Office enters the woods where a truck that apparently was dragging a man's body was set on fire on June 12.

Investigators with the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office are working a large crime scene that appears to begin at a home on CR 2746 and ends in a wooded area about a mile away in the Big Thicket Lake Estates – Creekmore Village north of Rye.

The investigation began as a 911 emergency call regarding a burning pickup truck around 10 p.m. Saturday. When firefighters arrived, they found the burned out truck in a wooded area off the road. Behind the vehicle was the body of a white male that appeared to have been dragged to the location.

The body was badly damaged but not burned, authorities say.

Crime scene tape blocks off the area where the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, Liberty County District Attorney Jennifer Bergman and the Texas Rangers are investigating a murder on Sunday.

As the investigation is still in its early stages, the cause of death is unknown. Pct. 3 Justice of the Peace Cody Parrish conducted an inquest at the scene and has ordered an autopsy, which should determine if the man was deceased prior to being dragged down the road. The blood trail reportedly begins at the house on CR 2746, down a dirt road, onto an asphalt road and into the woods.

Authorities reportedly are now questioning persons who lived at the home. No arrests have been made at this time.

Tips to Multi-County Crime Stoppers could result in a cash reward if the information leads to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for this crime, according to a statement from the sheriff’s office. To report information, call 1-800-392-STOP. The identity of persons making tips to Crime Stoppers will remain anonymous.

More information will be posted as new information warrants.

  1. It is one street over some people are saying that the man killed is Ray Rodriquez he was seeing the woman at that house and they are saying that the woman son killed Rodriquez and also 2 years ago killed his father

  2. There was a crack head on the street I live on last night. He told the neighbors he dragged a man behind a truck! Omg! He wasnt lying.

  3. Ray was such a nice man, I’m glad our paths crossed but saddened to know some evil idiot dis this to him!? Prayers lifted for him family and friends, he will be missed terribly!!

  4. Big Thicket Lake Estates has become a place Law Enforcement needs to come in and clean up. I lived there from 1992 through 2018. It was bad then, but from what I have seen first hand and hear from friends it is worse than ever. Drugs are rampant, robberies ~ a frequent occurrence and there seems to be no answer for the lawlessness threatening it’s residents. The Good people of BTLE deserve better law enforcement patrols and a task force to go in and remove the “never ending source of drug sales and some individuals ” pharmaceutical cooking of the drugs”. I left that beautiful place because it had become an unsafe place for my grandchildren to grow up in. My prayer would be for Liberty County S.O. ~ Texas Rangers ~ and the Drug Task Force work together to clean out the illegal drug trade and rampant theft and break-ins thereby making it a safe place to live again.

    • This area has gone down hill since the dam broke i was told by my husband that has raised his kids here. Polk County + Liberty County are supposed to care about this area. We are the far-out part of their jurisdiction that makes it hard ~ Welcome to rural Texas

I live out in Hoop n holler and I was alone and disabled and it took forever for the Sheriff’s Office to send an offer out for the trouble out there with dope heads stealing and acting scary walking up and down Love drive

      I had to move

Now where this occurred in the back of BTLE ~ this is a Crisis with the Drug problem that leads these people to have major mental health issues

I learned to stay to myself and not associate with these people

      It’s too close by Golly

You really don’t know what is really going on with the people down the block
