Liberty County Clerk’s Office in Cleveland closed until further notice

A sign is posted on the door of the Liberty County Clerk's Office in Cleveland advising people to contact the office in Liberty. The office was closed on Wednesday after the two employees who worked there were terminated.

The Liberty County Clerk’s Office in the Cleveland courthouse annex is closed at this time after two employees were terminated on Wednesday, May 25. The office will remain closed until staffing issues are resolved.

According to County Clerk Lee Haidusek Chambers, the employees were terminated for allegedly operating a business from the county clerk’s office.

“They were running a business on the side, officiating weddings, using their county access and knowledge to benefit from it,” said Chambers.

Chambers does not believe the alleged actions of the employees will invalidate the marriages they performed.

Computers used by the employees have been confiscated as part of the investigation.

The County Clerk’s office in the Cleveland annex sees a tremendous amount of traffic, much of which is the result of land transactions and the population growth in the area. Closing the office, even temporarily, will be a hardship, not only for the employees at the County Clerk’s office in Liberty but for the many people who do business there.

Recognizing the importance of getting the office reopened as quickly as possible, Chambers said she hopes to have the Cleveland office open and operational by Tuesday of next week by reallocating employees temporarily. All county offices are closed on Monday for Memorial Day.

“We are trying to figure out a way to keep Cleveland open without bringing the Liberty office to its knees. It’s going to be really hard on us for a month or so until we get things back to normal. It’s doable but it will be a hardship for a while,” Chambers said.

  1. Omg so what if they had a side business, did they take money from the county no , did they do there job when they where at work yes, people got jealous, then hated on them that the ones that u need to wstch

    • And if they are being paid to perform their county job when they are actually performing their ‘side job’? I have been in line at that office for more than 1 hour on a given day when they would tell people in line at 4:30 to come back another day after those citizens had waited more than 1 hour as well. Something was wrong. I thought the county clerk was just being chintzy in staffing. But if those ladies were ‘filling their day’ with side business, I would love to simply slap them

  2. LOL, sounds like Katrina’s hand was in the cookie jar… she being all defensive…love how they squill when they get busted.

  3. Well for a few dollars anyone can perform wedding . Unless they were on the clock no laws were broke.

LOL, apparently those that choose to comment choose not to read the story. Clearly, it states that they used county property at the least for profit. I love how the comments are so much better than the story. What if…what if…what if…OMG, idiots have me rolling on the floor.

  5. Anyone who has any common sense knows this is reason for termination. Jeez!! Wrong because they were operating a personal business on county time. It’s in every county handbook! I worked for a county where the DA was operating his law practice out of. It’s called double dipping!!

    • Working for the County while doing the side business that’s stealing from tax payers. A side note We have County people voted in to office doing side jobs what’s the difference? Same thing in my opinion.Either work for us are do the side job not both at the same time.
