One killed in crash on US 90 in Dayton

Dayton Police Department responded to a major crash in the westbound lane of travel on US 90 in the Trinity River bottom between Liberty and Dayton around 9:35 a.m. Tuesday, July 26.

According to a statement from Lt. Eric Ibarra, a spokesperson for Dayton Police Department, the accident involved a construction vehicle performing work for the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and an Acura SUV.

The driver of the SUV, the only occupant of that vehicle, was pronounced dead on the scene by Liberty County Pct. 4 Justice of the Peace Larry Wilburn. The driver is identified as Rosendo Varela, 23, of Liberty. His next of kin has been notified.

“The TxDOT construction vehicle was traveling westbound in the right-hand lane when it was struck from behind by the SUV. The crash caused traffic westbound to be shut down for several hours,” the statement continues.

No other injuries were reported.

The accident is being investigated by Dayton Police Department, assisted by the Texas Department of Public Safety.
