Suspect in custody for murder at Cleveland airport

Cleveland Police Chief Darrel Broussard (in the green shirt) speaks to Assistant District Attorney Kevin Barnes and DA Investigator Ivan Pierce at a homicide investigation at Cleveland Municipal Airport on Thursday, April 13.

A 20-year-old Cleveland man, Marco Jacquez, is facing a murder charge in Liberty County for the shooting death of 29-year-old man, Jesse Ray Rogers, at Cleveland Municipal Airport on Thursday, April 13.

Jacquez was captured by law enforcement in the Eagle Lake, Texas, area around 12:14 p.m, less than four hours after he reportedly opened fire on an employee of Lone Star Aviation Services, which provides aircraft maintenance services to planes at Cleveland Municipal Airport. Jacquez was captured after his vehicle was stopped by police.

Jacquez was back in Cleveland police custody Thursday night.

The shooting occurred near an airport hangar next to the runway. Rogers and another man were reportedly talking when they were approached by Jacquez, who worked for Lone Star Aviation Services until a few months ago when he quit, authorities say.

Jacquez reportedly approached Rogers, while holding a shotgun, and demanded that he get into his car. Rogers refused and was shot immediately by Jacquez, who then fled the scene. He fired at Rogers multiple times at a close range, striking him in the chest and face.

“We are still trying to determine why the suspect returned to his old workplace,” said Capt. Scott Felts when asked about the possible motive for the shooting.

The shooting was witnessed by other employees of Lone Star Aviation Services, Felts said.

Texas Rangers, Liberty County Assistant District Attorney Kevin Barnes and DA Investigators Ivan Pearce and James Ott assisted Cleveland PD at the crime scene, as did Cleveland Fire Department and Liberty County Sheriff’s Office.

Pct. 6 Justice of the Peace Ralph Fuller conducted an inquest at the scene and ordered an autopsy. Neal Funeral Home transported the body to Beaumont for autopsy.

  1. Is an ad for Neal Funeral home a good thing to place in the middle of this article? Wow, and this isn’t the Bee.

      • I am so sorry for your loss. Jesse was an amazing young man whom I had the privilege of watching grow up with my boys. I hope he knew just how proud of him I was for all he was accomplishing. I pray the person that did this horrible thing to Jesse gets the punishment he deserves.

  2. Its so sad. I remember trick or treating with jesse every halloween in spring oaks. He’s gonna have a lot of people missing him. And he didnt deserve what happened to him and it was much more violent than what this says. And Eloy(ejay) shouldn’t be saying anything other than he’s sorry his brother did something so horrible.

  3. Apologies will never be enough to bring back that sweet young man who always made sure to say hello and give me a hug. Thanks to your brother nobody will ever get another hello or hug from Jesse again. If I had it my way, I would push for the death penalty. The bible says to do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

    • While I can’t defend what Marco did I’ve been hearing from firsthand people who knew Jesse that he was no polite lille angel. I’ve actually been hearing he was relatively racist. Again I’m not defending Marco but that (if true) could largely be to blame for such a violent outburst. Still doesn’t justify it though. Also Lisa the bible preaches to love all and to hate is the same as to kill so are you any less a sinner if you commit to that mindset??
