Unidentified body found in field in Liberty County

A man looking for a lost cow on Sunday came across the badly decomposed body of a man lying in the high weeds of a field approximately 100 yards from a home in the Gulf Company Road area of southeast Liberty County, according to a statement from the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office.

Lead Investigator Sean Mitchell said the remains are thought to be those of a man who the landowner did not know well but had been staying at a residence on the property for several days. He was last seen on Monday, July 15, as he drove away from the property in a pickup truck, the statement continues.

Authorities have been unable to positively identify the man at this time, but say there was not immediate sign of foul play. Pct. 2 Justice of the Peace Ronnie Davis has ordered an autopsy and the sheriff’s office is continuing its investigation.
