UPDATED: Two men shot south of Dayton

Two young males suffered gunshot wounds as they were riding bicycles along CR 428 off of FM 1409 in the Westlake area south of Dayton shortly before midnight Sunday.

“They were on the road when this happened,” said Investigator Robert Dunn, a spokesperson for the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office.

The men, Christopher Allen Wells, 20, and Quintin Lee Brown, 24, both of Dayton, reportedly claimed that the shooter was a passenger in a dark-colored pickup truck.

“The passenger, believed to be a Hispanic male, got out of the truck, hit one of the males on the bicycle with an object, and then started shooting at them,” Dunn said.

Wells was shot in the foot, back and abdomen. Brown was struck in the neck. Authorities have identified the weapon as a 9-mm handgun.

“They say they didn’t know the shooter and had never seen him before,” Dunn said.

Both men were airlifted to Houston-area trauma centers. Remarkably, Dunn said, both are expected to fully recover and may be released from the hospital as early as Monday afternoon.

Westlake VFD assisted the sheriff’s office.
