WJH librarian transforms math learning with ozobots

There are great things happening at Wilson Junior High School in Dayton.

Librarian Laci Patty used her teaching experience to incorporate math TEKS into a fun and engaging lesson using ozobots in the Pony library. The math students used lines and color codes to program their ozobots to perform certain tasks and determine the length and width of a rectangle.

Ozobots are tiny coding robots that follow lines and colors. They work by drawing lines on paper and programming the ozobot to follow the lines that are made with colored markers.

Subsequently, they calculated the area and completed an area maze, creating paths for their ozobots to follow, while incorporating codes for tricks and observing the outcomes of different color combinations.

The students were engrossed, as this integration of technology and math proved to be both enjoyable and educational.

Librarian Ms. Patty also highlighted the value of collaboration across content areas.

“The students were 100 percent engaged because it combined technology with math. It was also an awesome experience because I was able to collaborate with another content area, beyond ELA.  It was exciting to get the students into the library more frequently and see them enjoying the hands-on activities,” she said.
