Fire destroys building in Liberty

Firefighters apply water to a burning garage on Davidge Street in Liberty on Wednesday morning, March 20.

A fire Wednesday morning, March 20, destroyed a garage at a home on Davidge street near Beaumont Ave. in Liberty.

According to Liberty Fire Chief Brian Hurst, the fire spread to the garage from a barbecue pit that was lit by a resident of the property. Due to the building having chemicals and gasoline stored in cans inside, the fire proved to be challenging for firefighters, Hurst said.

“It was hard to put out,” Hurst said.

Assisting Liberty firefighters were personnel from Liberty County ESD 7 (Hardin Fire and Rescue). While Liberty firefighters applied water to the fire from nearby hydrants, Hardin personnel helped by putting out hot spots and tearing down sections of the building to access the fire.

By 11 a.m., firefighters brought the blaze under control. No serious injuries were reported, Hurst said.

Because of their prompt response, firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to other nearby structures and fences.

A day earlier, on Tuesday morning around 9:15 a.m., Liberty firefighters responded to an 18-wheeler fire on US 90 at FM 1909. The fire originated in the brakes of the vehicle, and caused the tires to catch on fire.

Firefighters applied foam to the fire to smother it, said Fire Marshal Ashley Pate and Fire Capt. Justin Smith, and the fire was out within five minutes.
