Tragedy strikes at family gathering: 9-year-old boy loses life in backyard accident

A family gathering in the Colony Ridge communities south of Plum Grove turned into a scene of unimaginable sorrow as a 9-year-old boy lost his life in a backyard playground accident on the 100 block of CR 5263B.

According to LCSO Capt. David Meyers, the young boy was one of several children playing on a swing attached to a chain hoist mounted from an A-frame structure.

As they took turns pushing each other, the structure began to tip over. While swinging, the boy reportedly became aware of the frame tipping over, and tried to move out of harm’s way, but he was tragically caught in the back of the head by the corner of the structure.

Despite the desperate efforts of his family members, who initiated CPR, the young boy could not be revived. Pct. 6 Justice of the Peace Ralph Fuller conducted an inquest at the scene of the accident.

The boy, who was not a resident of the Colony Ridge communities, lived with an aunt in Porter.
