This week, Cleveland ISD is hosting a donation drive to collect items for flood victims, specifically focusing on students and their families. Running from Monday through Friday, May 6-10, the drive has garnered an incredible response from across the region, with donations pouring in at an astonishing rate.

Superintendent Stephen McCanless said he is amazed by the outpouring of support. District staff and volunteers are working tirelessly to gather and distribute these much-needed supplies to those affected by the disaster.

“Every campus, all 12 campuses, are taking their own donations. We told people to drop it off at their nearest campus or at the central office,” McCanless said, standing among the tables loaded with donations at the Cleveland ISD Administration Building. “Campus staff are sorting the cleaning supplies, toiletries, hygiene items, clothing items and other things. We will get what was donated at the Admin Building to the campuses where they can arrange for the items to be distributed to people in the community.”

McCanless said that campus staff are already working on lists of students who were impacted by recent flooding that left many homes across the District damaged or destroyed.

Cleveland ISD’s disaster response has also grown to include pet food through the Houston Humane Society.

“They called me and said they had heard about what was going on in Cleveland with our donation drive, and they wanted to help out. I told them, ‘You better believe we would like to have you help out, so get on in here because we have animals in need, too,'” McCanless said, adding that he was promised a delivery of pet food for 200 animals.
