On the evening of Thursday, May 23, 2024, a dramatic incident unfolded in San Jacinto County, as two vehicles collided head-on along Fostoria Tram Rd. near Meekins Road.
The San Jacinto County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call reporting the crash, with additional reports indicating that one of the drivers, a female, was suspected of being intoxicated and attempting to flee the scene.
A deputy from the Sheriff’s Criminal Interdiction Unit, who happened to be nearby, responded and approached the vehicle. The deputy reportedly witnessed the female driver reversing in an apparent attempt to escape. Despite the deputy’s commands to halt, the driver unexpectedly accelerated toward the deputy, forcing the law enforcement officer to take evasive action, according to reports from SJC Sheriff Greg Capers.
The driver reportedly then recklessly sped away northbound on Fostoria Tram, prompting a pursuit by the deputy. However, the escape attempt was short-lived, as the driver crashed into a tree, still refusing to comply with commands to exit the vehicle and displaying signs of intoxication.
During the escape, the driver also damaged valuable firefighting equipment – two hydraulic extrication tools belonging to the Bear Creek Volunteer Fire Department.
The female driver, identified as Karsen Elizabeth Kruger of Kingwood, has since been charged with Driving While Intoxicated (Class B Misdemeanor), Evading Arrest/Detention in a Motor Vehicle (State Jail Felony), and Aggravated Assault on a Public Servant (1st Degree Felony). She is currently detained at the San Jacinto County Jail, held on a bond set at $19,000.
