A tragic collision occurred on SH 105 just west of Moss Hill at approximately 2:10 p.m. on Saturday, June 1, claiming the life of a Cleveland man, while four other individuals were rushed to hospitals for treatment.
According to Sgt. Rob Willoughby, who supervises the Liberty County office of the Texas Department of Public Safety, the crash is being attributed to the combination of heavy rain, reduced visibility, and the deceased man driving too quickly for the road conditions at the time.
The deceased man, age 30, of Cleveland, was traveling eastbound in a 2012 Toyota Camry. He veered into the path of a westbound 2018 Chevy Silverado pulling a camper trailer. The deceased driver lost control of his vehicle and veered into oncoming traffic, with the truck striking the driver’s side of the Toyota Camry.
The Cleveland man, whose identity is being withheld at this time, died during the crash. Pct. 5 Justice of the Peace Wade Brown conducted an inquest at the scene and ordered an autopsy.
The driver of the Chevy pickup, Reghan Berry, 51, of Buna, was transported to Kingwood Hospital with non life-threatening injuries, Willoughby stated. Jeffrey Sheppard, 67, of Buna, was a front-seat passenger in the pickup truck. He also was transported to Kingwood Hospital with serious injuries.
Two 15-year-old male passengers in the backseat of the pickup suffered minor injuries and were transported to Kingwood Hospital.
The deceased driver was traveling alone in his vehicle.
Investigating the crash is DPS Corp. Godfrey, assisted by Sgt. Willoughby and Trooper Haley Smith.
