The Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with the US Marshals’ Houston, Tyler, and Beaumont Divisions, conducted a series of compliance checks for registered sex offenders residing in Liberty County from June 10-14, 2024.
This comprehensive operation resulted in approximately 300 compliance checks, uncovering 16 sex offenders who were found to be out of compliance with the legal guidelines they are mandated to follow.
These 16 individuals face warrants for their arrest under the charge of “Failing to Comply Sex Offender Duty to Register Annual/Life,” classified as a third-degree Felony.
Liberty County is home to approximately 320 registered sex offenders living in the non-incorporated areas outside of the major cities. Depending on court-mandated guidelines, these individuals must update their registration with the Sheriff’s Office monthly, quarterly, or yearly. It is important to note that this figure does not include sex offenders residing within the incorporated city limits of Dayton, Liberty, or Cleveland, who must register with their respective city police departments.
Capt. David Meyers, spokesperson for the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, lauded the operation and indicated future plans for similar efforts.
“This was a complete success, and something that the Sheriff’s Office plans to do at least twice a year,” Meyers stated.
The success of these compliance checks is attributed to the meticulous planning and coordination led by the Sheriff’s Office Sex Offender Registrar, Haylea Kelso, along with the dedicated efforts of the US Marshal’s Office and LCSO Investigators. What a waste of time and resources. Why not dedicate the same efforts towards eliminating domestic violence or educate the public on who actually commits the sex crimes…hint, hint? It’s the people NOT on the registry, those already in a relationship with the victim such as a family relative, teacher, coach, trusted friend, etc. The registry DOES NOT improve public safety. Decades of research and facts prove it.
Does the county also keep up with murderers, drug abusers, burglars and where other felons live and are those crimes decreasing accordingly as a result?
There are too many innocent people going to prison for sex crimes because prosecutors lie withhold evidence fabricate evidence and use purchase testimony to convict innocent man so they can get promoted. Our justice system is not about truth it’s all about conviction. The registry thing is all it does not help anybody it’s all about money hiring people to keep track of people on the registry most have not had any problems with the law enforcement in 26 years but yet they just keep on trying to destroy your life.

Absolute waste of taxpayer dollars. These compliance checks are a dog and pony show because none of the info collected by the registry has ever been used in preventing or solving a crime.
It’s a lazy way to make it seem like an agency is tough in crime. Instead these resources need to go to guaranteeing mental health benefits to victims and broadening education programs to vulnerable people.
