
Margaret W. Murphy passed from this earthly life on June 18, 2024, at the age of 92 after a brief illness. She was born on September 2, 1931, in Daisetta, Texas, to Annie Mae (McCormack) and Lemuel L. Winfrey. She graduated from Hull-Daisetta High School and earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas. She started her teaching career in Daisetta where she met and married her husband, Dwight Murphy, in 1952. Margaret retired from teaching in Liberty in 1996. She was a member of the Hull-Daisetta Golden Oldies, the Libertad Chapter of the DAR and the Liberty First United Methodist Church.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, Jack D. Winfrey, sister-in-law, Doris Winfrey and God daughter, Linda Woods Bartell. Left to cherish her memory are daughter, Lauren Murphy, and son-in-law, Michael Baker, of Spring, Texas; grandson, Logan Baker, of Austin, Texas; granddaughter, Callie Baker, of College Station, Texas and granddaughter, Cade Baker, of Spring, Texas. She is also survived by sister-in-law, Rena (Murphy) Cooper, of Irving, Texas; God daughter and niece, Joan Winfrey Seoni (Vik); nieces, Joy Winfrey, of Covington, Louisiana; Julie Winfrey Cummings (Greg) of Fairhope, Alabama; Lisa Jenkins (Bill) of Irving, Texas; Lori Halepaska (Neil) of Irving, Texas; two great nephews and two great nieces.
Margaret had a compassionate soul and was a good listener who gave time to her family, friends and students. She positively impacted generations of children during her almost 40 years of teaching. She had the gift of making true and lasting friendships at all stages of her life. Her dear friends are too numerous to name in this obituary, but please know she truly loved you all and thought of you as family, especially best friend from birth, Jennie (Sadler) Haynie, the San Jacinto Gang, the Cravey Family, her Yupon Neighborhood, the Brill Table of Knowledge and the beloved Wednesday Lunch Bunch.
A visitation for Margaret will be held at Allison Funeral Service in Liberty on Sunday, June 23, 2024, from 5 to 7 PM with private burial on Monday. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Liberty Municipal Library, the Methodist Church or the charity of your choice.
