Hurricane Beryl uproots beloved tree at Liberty County Courthouse

Pct. 1 Commissioner Bruce Karbowski shared this photo of a tree knocked down by Hurricane Beryl on the Liberty County Courthouse square.

In the early hours of Monday, July 8, Hurricane Beryl swept through Liberty County, leaving a path of destruction in its wake.

Among the notable casualties of the storm was a beloved pecan tree that had stood on the courthouse square for generations. This cherished tree, located on the south side of the Liberty County Courthouse facing First Liberty Bank, was not just a fixture of the landscape but a silent witness to the county’s history and a provider of comfort to its residents.

For years, the old pecan tree’s broad canopy has provided much-needed shade during the sweltering summer months to employees and visitors. It was especially valued during National Day of Prayer events, where community residents would gather under its branches to pray and reflect.

Pct. 1 Commissioner Bruce Karbowski, who is responsible for the maintenance of the courthouse and other county buildings, said crews are still assessing damage throughout the county.

“Trees are down in multiple locations,” he said.

  1. I think once it cools off it would be cool to do a tree planting ceremony, maybe get some local food trucks or BBQ places out there and cook and have people bring their own chairs and then plant a new tree! Yes it’s sad it’s been around for generations but what makes this community great is the people and having them come together to plant a new tree would be cool memories for this generation and the next several. And pictures.can be taken and put in the paper and a whole spread be devoted to it! The hurricane that left disaster in it it’s path makes way for new life and new memories for the citizens of Liberty County!
