Moth Night Out returns to Liberty this Saturday

Stuart Marcus, former director of the Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge, has devoted part of his life to cataloging every species of moth.

Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge will host its Annual Moth Night Out Event, taking place on Saturday evening, July 20, 2024, as part of the nationwide celebration of National Moth Week.

The event will kick off at 9 p.m. at the Refuge Headquarters located at 601 FM 1011, Liberty, Texas, directly across from the Sam Houston Regional Library and Research Center.

Attendees will have the unique opportunity to see and photograph some of the over 1,000 species of moths documented around the building’s security lights. The event will also feature black lights and mercury vapor lights to attract a wide variety of moth species.

National Moth Week provides a much-needed spotlight on the ecological importance and incredible biodiversity of moths. It offers everyone, everywhere, a unique opportunity to become a Citizen Scientist and contribute valuable scientific data about moths.

Through partnerships with major online biological data depositories, National Moth Week participants can help map moth distribution and provide essential information on various life history aspects of moths around the globe.

The event is open to all ages, but participants should be prepared for a late evening and hot, muggy weather. The Refuge encourages families, especially those with children, to come and enjoy this educational and fun night.

For more information about the event, please contact the Refuge office at 936-336-9786.
