In a swift and decisive verdict, 51-year-old Darrell Wayne Lang, formerly of Cleveland, was found guilty of continuous sexual abuse of a child involving two young victims over a span of several years. The jury took just eight minutes to convict Lang on Tuesday, July 23, in the 75th State District Courtroom in Liberty, with visiting judge Kaycee Jones presiding.
The prosecution, led by Shanna Redwine, Division Chief, and Brittney Aaron, Chief Prosecutor, from the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office, presented a compelling case. The case was originally investigated by the Montgomery County Pct. 1 Constable’s Office with the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office following a tip received by the DA’s Internet Crimes Against Children Division.
The tip came from another defendant who had pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography, revealing that Lang, an IT forensics professional, was mentoring others on how to evade detection and shield their identities from law enforcement while committing other pedophilic activities.
“Lang ran different groups online for like-minded individuals. A lot of these groups pride themselves on being private, and their members use applications that are encrypted and do not easily cooperate with law enforcement,” said Redwine. She added that it is impossible to determine how many other pedophiles were mentored by Lang over the years.
The investigation that led to Lang’s arrest began in September 2021, and by the first week of October 2021, he was arrested. At the time some of the sexual acts were committed on his two young victims, Lang and his female accomplice were living at an apartment complex in Cleveland, Texas.
During his trial, jurors were shown a sampling of some of the videos Lang had taken of his two young victims. He and his girlfriend, who has since pleaded guilty in Harris County to aggravated sexual assault of a child related to this case, had access to these children on a regular basis. Prior to his trial in Liberty County, Lang also had already pleaded guilty to multiple counts of possession of child pornography in Montgomery County.
The victims—a boy and a girl—were very young when the abuse began. They were 15 and 13 years old when the abuse ended with Lang’s arrest and the female perpetrator being sentenced to prison. Due to the overwhelming video and photographic evidence, the children, who now live out of state, were not required to testify in court.
The videos shown to the Liberty County jury this week depicted the abuse and grooming of the children. A longtime investigator for the Montgomery County DA’s office, Jeff Chapell, who testified in and investigated the case, struggled to hold back tears as he described the years of abuse the children endured. He said it was among the worst pornographic material he has seen in his 20-year career.
“[The children] had been groomed to the point where this is what they were expected to do every day,” he said.
During the punishment phase of the trial, when asked by Chief Prosecutor Brittney Aaron what made this case stand out from others he has seen, Chapell said, “It’s the progression. Very rarely do we see grooming to where they are reaching mature age and almost rejected because the perpetrator wants to move on to something else. Documentation of the process is rarely done to this degree,” he said.
He added that the children thought that the vile acts that were being performed on them and with them were acts that took place in every family.
“They thought it was just the way it is. It’s what we all do,” Chapell testified.
In closing remarks, Aaron said that a life sentence is the only answer to this case.
“Anything else puts every child at risk,” she said, asking Judge Jones to consider stacking the Harris County charges and the Liberty County charges to give Lang the maximum sentence possible of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
As she announced her sentencing, Judge Jones told the defendant: “You have spent every moment and second of your life receiving what you want from others. You are only concerned with what you want and what you desire. That is unacceptable. The way you did it might be the worst I have seen in my 24-year career. There is no punishment that would be suitable. Hopefully, your victims will be satisfied to know that you will spend the rest of your life in prison.”
Montgomery County District Attorney Brett Ligon said about the verdict: “I am very intentional when I use the word ‘monster’ to name Darrell W. Lang. He terrorized and then victimized these innocent little babies. But there are heroes as well—these kids were strong enough to survive what he did, along with the other heroes who investigated then prosecuted him. He will never touch another child again and will rightly spend the rest of his miserable life in prison paying for these crimes. May God have mercy on his soul because the rest of him belongs to the Texas Department of Corrections.”
In response to the verdict and sentencing of Lang, Liberty County District Attorney Jennifer Bergman said, “Today, justice was served as Darrell Wayne Lang was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for Continuous Sexual Assault of a Child. Lang is one of the most heinous monsters we have ever prosecuted. His conviction and lengthy sentence ensures that he will spend the rest of his days languishing in prison. Unfortunately, no sentence seems sufficient for the horrific acts he committed. We are deeply grateful to the dedicated investigators and prosecutors who worked tirelessly on this case. Their commitment and perseverance brought justice for the victims and made Liberty County a safer place. We also extend our heartfelt thanks to the jury for their careful deliberation and for upholding justice.”
Bergman said the conviction should send a message that prosecutors will relentlessly pursue justice for those who prey on the most vulnerable.
“Thank you to everyone involved for their unwavering dedication throughout this case,” she added.

I personally think he should get the needle.
I dont, that would be too easy. He needs to live with the guilt and wrong of it all. People in prison don’t do kindly by those perverted beings. Abusing kids is the worst of the worst.
