Cleveland Police Department Officers E. Fleming and F. Hernandez responded to a report of a suspicious person on Monday, August 19, 2024, at approximately 8:14 a.m., in the 1700 block of McKeller Avenue. A resident had reported that an unknown individual entered her backyard and took a photo of her Ring camera.
Upon arrival, officers encountered a man and a woman standing near the residence. The couple reportedly explained that they had been discussing the brand and type of doorbell seen on the neighbor’s door. In an attempt to settle the debate, the man admitted to entering the neighbor’s yard to take a picture of the doorbell.
Officers requested identification from both individuals and ran a check through the CPD Communications Division. The male subject was found to have an outstanding warrant for “Assault Family Violence” out of the Hempstead Police Department. When officers attempted to detain him, the situation escalated quickly.
The male subject allegedly resisted arrest and began physically assaulting Officer Hernandez, striking the officer multiple times in the face with a closed fist. He also grabbed Officer Fleming by the hair in an attempt to overpower the officers. Despite efforts to gain control of the situation, including the use of a taser, the subject continued to resist, even attempting to disarm Officer Fleming by grabbing her taser.
Due to the subject’s sweat and aggressive resistance, officers were unable to secure him in handcuffs. The subject managed to break free and fled on foot, leading officers on a brief chase before he disappeared into a wooded area between McKeller Avenue and Ross Street.
Allegiance EMS arrived on the scene to provide medical assistance to the officers, who were treated for shortness of breath caused by the extreme heat and minor injuries sustained during the altercation.
Cleveland Police Detective Shaver later arrived to interview witnesses and assist in the ongoing investigation. Officers are actively pursuing warrants for the arrest of the suspect, identified as 21-year-old Courtavion Lamarque Scott of Bedias, Texas.
Scott is considered a threat to the community, and law enforcement is urging anyone with information on his whereabouts to come forward. Citizens are asked to contact the Cleveland Police Department at 281-592-2622 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-392-7867. All callers will remain anonymous.
This case remains active, and the Cleveland Police Department is committed to bringing this violent individual to justice.
