Road widening project in Liberty will add center turn lane

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has commenced work on a significant widening project along SH 146, just north of Liberty. The ongoing project, which spans approximately three miles, is designed to improve traffic flow and safety in the area.

Tanya Avila, public information officer for TxDOT, explained that this is an overlay and widening project.

The primary goal is to add a center left-turn lane between McGuire Road and Valley Drive and an overlay project from SL 227 (the bypass) to US 90. In addition to road widening, the project includes upgrading drainage structures to improve storm water management along the highway.

Texas Materials Group, Inc. has been contracted to carry out the work, which is expected to create minor traffic delays. Motorists should anticipate lane closures within the construction zones as crews work on the project.

Despite these disruptions, TxDOT assures that the effort will result in a smoother road surface and improved traffic flow, thanks to the new center left-turn lane.

Construction is expected to wrap up by the summer of 2025, enhancing the safety and convenience of SH 146 for local drivers. In the meantime, TxDOT urges motorists to remain cautious when traveling through the construction zones.

  1. Lol, a lot of money spent to cover for the boneheaded engineering TxDOT did in which traffic turning into Stripes and into Forest Hills shares the same turn lane. They know why it happened but dare not admit it.

  2. I’ve been rearended, as well as a few coworkers, turning left into PLC. It would have been great for the turn lane to extend this far up.
