A white SUV was struck by a westbound train around 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 13, near the intersection of N. Winfree St. and FM 1008 in Dayton.

The female driver, heading northbound on N. Winfree St., had been waiting to pull forward at the busy four-way intersection when the railroad crossing arms came down.

According to Dayton Police Capt. Shane Burleigh, the woman panicked as traffic in front of her was stopped, leaving her vehicle on the train tracks.

Although there was no traffic behind her, she exited the SUV, abandoning it in the path of the oncoming train. The train struck the front passenger-side quarter panel of the vehicle moments later.

Fortunately, the woman was uninjured in the incident. Traffic in the area is currently delayed while authorities investigate and clear the scene.

Dayton Police Department reminds motorists that it is never advised to stop on train tracks while waiting for an opportunity to turn at a stop sign.

Trains are unable to stop quickly, and remaining on the tracks while waiting for an opportunity to pull forward at an intersection can be extremely dangerous.

  1. Put it in reverse, cheaper to repair a few scratches and a railroad crossing arm, than the car, and train. Yep she will get a bill from the railroad for damage to the train
