A potentially dangerous situation occurred on Monday morning, Sept. 16, at Tarkington High School when an altercation between two parents escalated in the school’s parking lot. According to an official statement from Tarkington ISD, one of the parents reportedly brandished a small-caliber handgun during the verbal dispute, leading to an immediate response from school administrators and law enforcement.
The incident, which stemmed from a disagreement between two high school girls, resulted in the arrest of one of the parents involved. According to Tarkington ISD Superintendent Elna Davis, the confrontation followed an altercation between two female students over a male student. The two girls had been involved in a physical fight in the school’s commons area, which led to the school contacting their parents.
When both sets of parents arrived at the school, tensions quickly flared in the parking lot. During the exchange of words, one of the parents—a mother of one of the students, Tia-Larae Haruko Gnehm—reportedly brandished the handgun and threatened the other parent. The Tarkington High School administration, alongside the campus School Resource Officer (SRO), acted swiftly to defuse the situation. They managed to secure the firearm, which had not been fired.
Additional law enforcement, including the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office and the Pct. 5 Constable’s Office, arrived within minutes, and the parent who brandished the gun was arrested. The individual—Gnehm—has been charged with bringing a firearm onto school grounds and threatening another person.
Superintendent Davis expressed gratitude for the swift and professional actions of all parties involved, saying, “I sincerely thank the THS administration, the Pct. 5 Deputy Constable SRO, the deputy constables, and the sheriff’s office for their prompt response and assistance. Our highest priority is the safety and well-being of our students and our TISD community.”
Davis also called on the Tarkington community to approach conflicts peacefully and set an example for students.
“As a community, I urge everyone to resolve conflicts calmly, professionally, and safely, being mindful that we are setting examples for our children of how to reach peaceful solutions to disagreements without involving threats of violence,” she said.
Gnehm was transported to the Liberty County Jail where she is being held on a charge of Unlawfully Carrying a Weapon in Prohibited Places. Bond has not been set.
I understand taking a weapon to school property is illegal, but my question is this, had it NOT been on school property, would one be charged with an illegal firearm since Texas is open carry? This question has been on my mind several times when I read of arrests.
Yes, if you pull your firearm to threaten someone with it, you will be arrested for Disorderly Conduct with a Weapon – or worse. Just because we can open carry (holstered somewhere on our body – typically on the hip), doesn’t mean we can walk around with it in our hands, and especially doesn’t mean we get to yell and scream at someone then present the gin to cause them to fear for their life. My son goes to this school, and as a gun carrying woman, I am disgusted by this incident.
