Liberty Masons to host cornerstone leveling ceremony for new fire station

The Grand Lodge of Texas will conduct a cornerstone leveling ceremony for the new City of Liberty Fire Station No. 2 on Monday, Nov. 4, 2024, at 10 a.m. The event will take place at the fire station site, located on the south side of US 90, behind AutoZone. This special event is being hosted by Liberty Masonic Lodge.

Michael L. Wiggins, past Grand Master of Masons in Texas, will travel to Liberty to lead the ceremony, joined by the Grand Master and officers of the Grand Lodge of Texas, who are coming from across the state to mark this historic occasion. The public is encouraged to attend.

Construction on Fire Station No. 2 began in Fall 2023, following an official groundbreaking ceremony in October. This new facility has been made possible through a substantial $5 million grant from the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs, with the City of Liberty contributing an additional $1 million for construction and improvements, bringing the total projected cost to $6 million.

With a vital Union Pacific rail line running through Liberty, often impacting traffic, this second fire station will enable rapid emergency access to areas south of the tracks. Like its counterpart on Lakeland Drive, Fire Station No. 2 will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to ensure full coverage for the Liberty community.

The new facility will feature three apparatus bays housing a ladder truck, booster truck, medic unit, and rescue boat.

The station’s layout includes designated rooms for bunker gear, tool storage, hose racks, and a decontamination shower, alongside training rooms, a kitchen, dining area, lounge, exercise room, dormitories, offices, and a reception area.

According to Liberty Fire Chief Brian Hurst, construction of the fire station has been slightly delayed, but it should be open by the end of the year.
