Lucette Scott Johnson was born May 9, 1933, in Broaddus, Texas, to the late Eula Demeris (Wise) and Hammond “Hoss” Scott, Jr. and died Monday, Oct. 21, 2024, in Liberty, Texas.
Lucette spent her early years in the piney woods of East Texas, graduated from high school in 1950, and shortly thereafter moved to Liberty, Texas. She married Preston Ellis Johnson on Aug. 12, 1955, and became not only a wife but the stepmother of his four young daughters. The family grew with the birth of a beloved son and brother, Preston Ellis Johnson Il, on July 24, 1963.
Lucette was active in the lives of her children serving as Girl Scout Leader, Boy Scout Den Mother, room mother and PTA member.
She was a past member of the Liberty Garden Club, Master Gardener Class, City of Liberty Library Board (serving as President), and First United Methodist Church of Liberty (former hand-bell choir member). She enjoyed many activities with friends: berry picking with Denise Barkis, (as reported in the Wall Street Journal), birding, antiquing, and cooking. Her biscuits were savored by everyone who had the chance to try them, and even reproduced in one of the finest restaurants in New York City. Lucette traveled widely from Australia to Russia and made many wonderful trips to Mexico with her husband Preston in their motorhome. She loved music, the theater, good books, good wine and good friends, of whom she had many. Most of all though she loved and treasured her family and she remained, throughout her long life, dedicated to taking care of them all. Lucette would remind us all that the present moment is precious, and that we should make the most of it by loving fully and generously.
Lucette is survived by her son, Preston Ellis Johnson II (Beth), and her three stepdaughters, Annie Lamar Iverson (Neal), Barbara Lee Norwood (Ronny) and Deborah Ellis Boot (Ken). She is also survived by 7 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren: Preston Ellis Johnson III, Benjamin Neal Johnson; Sarah Ellis Iverson (Matt McLeod) and their children Myles Iverson, Emma Hudson and Mason Blake McLeod; Emily Lamar Iverson (Jordan Frosolone) and their children Zanghi Ellis and Elio Jerome Frosolone; Jason Carrington Norwood (Kathy) and their children Barbara Olivia and Casper Caves Norwood; Kathryn Lee (Jay Schultz) and their children Thomas Norwood, Griffin Scott and Spenser Lee Schultz; and Preston Matthew Norwood (Sara) and their children Gillilan Sophia, Stella Lucette and Preston Matthew Norwood II.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, stepdaughter Alice, sisters Julia Scott and Alnet “Scottie” Bailess, and brothers Sam, LaVane, Atholee, Hammond, Jr., Melvin, and John Scott.
