Michael Charles “Mike” McCarty

Michael Charles “Mike” McCarty passed away on Thursday, Oct. 24, 2024, at the age of 71. Mike’s selfless dedication to his family, work and community will be missed by all who loved him.

Mike was born in Liberty, Texas on April 20, 1953, to Charles Ray and Bette Waters McCarty. A life-long Liberty resident, Mike graduated from Liberty High School. During his youth he developed a passion for music and taught himself how to play the guitar. He played in many bands throughout high school and college. After high school, Mike attended Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, where he was a proud member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity.

After college, Mike returned to Liberty to work with his father in the family business. In the 198os, Mike, along with his business partner Jamie Edwards, started his own oil and environmental services companies, Triangle Petroleum and Triangle Industrial Services. After 45 years in oilfield service, Mike retired to spend time on his farm tending to his cows and driving his tractor.

Mike’s true passion was service to others and his community. He spent much of his lifetime involved in various organizations including the Liberty Chamber of Commerce. Mike was a member of the Liberty Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow. Mike enjoyed donning his famous red coveralls for Rotary fish frys and oyster suppers. Mike served as President of the Board of Magnolia Ridge Country Club for many years where he enjoyed volunteering and organizing tournaments and other events. The Chamber of Commerce awarded Mike with Liberty’s Citizen of the Year award in 1997. In 1998, Mike was elected to the Liberty City Council where he served the community for 13 years. Mike also served on the Liberty Community Development Corporation for 20 years. In 2012, Mike was elected as Liberty County Commissioner, Precinct 1, where he served proudly.

Mike was a devout and faithful member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. He was involved in many church activities. Mike served on the Parish Finance Council and was a member of the Knights of Colombus, Liberty Council. Mike enjoyed organizing and cooking for many church events like the Shamrocks and Spaghetti Supper and smoking chickens for Superbowl Sunday. Mike also looked forward to putting on his red apron every fall and working the Catholic fair booth.

Mike’s proudest accomplishment was his family. His wife of 44 years, DanElla and his two daughters, Kathrine Belle and Kirsti Ryan. His greatest joy was being Granddad to his 8-year-old grandson, Owen Michael.

Mike is survived by his wife, DanElla McCarty; daughters, Kathrine Belle and husband, Trey McConnell, and Kirsti Ryan and husband, Vicente Villagomez; grandson, Owen Michael Villagomez; sister Deborah Swan and her husband Steve; as well as numerous other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Bette McCarty; his sister, Beverly McCarty; his brother, Patrick McCarty; and his beloved Yorkie, Kirby.

Honoring the family by serving as pallbearers will be Jamie Edwards, Guy Gatewood, Jim Shurtleff, Jay Arnold, Mike Smith, David Castle, and David Leonard. His Sigma Chi fraternity brothers will be honorary pallbearers. Mike’s Sigma Chi fraternity brothers will be recognized as honorary pallbearers in tribute to his lasting brotherhood and cherished memories with them.

Friends are invited to visit with the family beginning at 10am, on Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2024, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 411 Milam Street in Liberty. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11am, with Fr. David Edward as the Celebrant. A Rite of Committal will immediately follow in Fairlawn Cemetery in Liberty, Texas.
