SJC sheriff faces unexpected employee exodus on first day in office

.

On the first day of his new term as San Jacinto County Sheriff, Sheriff Sam Houston faced an unexpected challenge—a mass exodus of employees from both the sheriff’s office and the county jail.

While five employees, including the chief deputy, one lieutenant, two detectives, and a captain, were already not expected to be retained under the new administration, the departure of an additional 14 employees came as quite a surprise. Combined with eight existing vacancies, most of which were in the jail, the department found itself operating with a significantly reduced staff.

New Chief Deputy Stanley Jolly told Bluebonnet News that the departures represent approximately 30 percent of the total workforce between the sheriff’s office and the jail. Despite the staffing shortfall, Jolly assured the public that steps have been taken to maintain law enforcement services.

“We’re running pretty much what they were running before,” Jolly said, explaining that staff has been shifted around to cover gaps and ensure that county residents do not experience interruptions in service.

Jolly added that deputies are picking up comp time during this transition period. As soon as the department is fully staffed, those deputies will be compensated with time off.

The sheriff’s office is now focused on recruiting new employees to fill the vacancies and stabilize operations.

“We are accepting applications for a dispatcher, patrolmen and jailers,” Jolly said. Applications can be submitted through the San Jacinto County website, https://www.co.san-jacinto.tx.us/page/sanjacinto.Jobs.Openings, once the jobs are posted by the county.

According to Jolly, the annual starting salaries for these positions are $50,390.30 for deputies, $41,290.85 for dispatcher and $46,864 for jail detention officers.

  3. Well, I guess that just shows the new sheriff is not right for the job and people do not want to work for him! I don’t blame them. Thanks San Jacinto county for voting out a perfectly good sheriff! Good luck with this one!

  4. The new sheriff has been elected now, everyone needs to give him the chance to do his job.Wait and see if he does not do his job before negative comments are made.I have heard nothing but good comments for him.Time will tell if he is the right man for the job.We all need to stand up for him and let him do what needs to be done in SanJacinto county. If he doesn’t do his job then you can gripe about it until then give him a chance.

  5. Give Sheriff Houston time. He does not need a chance, he has already proven himself. The mass exodus only shows the true character of the San Jacinto Co officers that were in place. We do not know if it was also by Sheriff Houston’s choice as well for them to leave. From being in the county twenty years and going thru a few sheriffs over time. It was truly time for Sheriff Capers to leave. When you place yourself in the position he was in, you sometimes forget who helped place you in the position and WHY you were there. Your personal agenda come first and when that happens, it is time to go. My encounters with Sheriff Capers were very unpleasant. Any help you need from other entities all refer you back to the sheriff of the county. When the help is non-existence, then the only recourse is VOTE. I am proud of San Jacinto residents to exercise that God given right. We did it. I see a better future for San Jacinto County. Now people do not relax, we have other positions that need our voting attention. complacency needs to be ridden from our county as we grow. Thanks

  6.
