The Liberty County Emergency Services District (ESD) 7 invites the public to celebrate the grand opening of the new Moss Hill Fire Station, Station 2, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15. Located on SH 105 just east of the SH 146 intersection in Moss Hill, the new station marks a significant step forward in improving fire and emergency services in the area.
Construction of the $500,000 fire station began in April 2024, funded through sales tax revenues collected within the emergency services district. Equipped with a 3,000-gallon tanker, 750-gallon fire engine, brush truck, and high-water rescue vehicle capable of carrying 500 gallons of water, the station is prepared to respond to emergencies in the community.
However, the station’s success hinges on one critical factor: manpower. With volunteerism at historic lows, finding dedicated volunteer firefighters remains a challenge.
“We are looking for people in the community who are willing to commit to training and responding to emergencies,” said Chief Nic Nelson. “There are jobs for everybody. You can run medical calls, be a driver, or pull a hose for fires. There are plenty of gaps that need to be filled.”
The grand opening ceremony will feature a traditional ceremonial uncoupling of the fire hose, a unique take on the more familiar ribbon-cutting tradition. The event, planned by Tammie Wingfield, wife of ESD Board Assistant Treasurer Bill Wingfield, will also include a community meal. Attendees can enjoy Frito pies with chili prepared by Bill Wingfield, with desserts generously provided by Bluebonnet News. Drinks will also be available.
Once fully operational, the ESD 7 plans to pursue updated ISO ratings, which may help lower property insurance rates for residents in the Moss Hill and surrounding areas.
The Liberty County ESD 7 Board is led by President Richard “Richey” Ewing, Vice President Brett Audilet, Secretary/Treasurer Mark Neal, Assistant Treasurer Bill Wingfield, and new board member Randyle Walters Jr.
