A Liberty County Sheriff’s Office lieutenant reportedly was the victim of an intentional vehicle collision during a road rage incident at the intersection of SH 105 and SH 146.
According to a statement from LCSO Capt. David Meyers, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 27, Lt. Bennett was driving home in a newly purchased Sheriff’s Office Tahoe when he observed a 2015 Ford F-250 stopped at a stop sign, blocking the path of an 18-wheeler attempting to turn onto Highway 105.
Anticipating that the F-250 would need to reverse to allow the truck to complete its turn, Lt. Bennett reportedly slowly began backing up to create space while remaining mindful of vehicles behind him.
“Suddenly, the driver of the F-250 exited his vehicle, visibly angry, and began shouting and cursing at Lt. Bennett, unaware that he was a law enforcement officer. The driver then re-entered his vehicle, put it in reverse, and intentionally rammed the rear of his truck into the front of Lt. Bennett’s county-issued vehicle,” said Meyers.
Lt. Bennett immediately exited his vehicle, identified himself as a law enforcement officer, and took the suspect into custody. The driver, later identified as James Ferguson, allegedly told Bennett that he did not realize he was law enforcement. Lt. Bennett reportedly informed Ferguson that his knowledge of his law enforcement status was irrelevant, as the act of intentionally striking another vehicle constituted aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Witness statements were gathered at the scene, and the case has been referred to the Liberty County District Attorney’s Office for prosecution. Ferguson was transported to the Liberty County Jail without further incident.
