A powerful Arctic front is set to move through Texas this week, bringing storms on Tuesday, Feb. 18, and a sharp drop in temperatures by midweek. According to the Liberty County Office of Emergency Management (LCOEM), residents should prepare now as a hard freeze is possible Wednesday night.
The Arctic front is expected to arrive Tuesday, bringing potential thunderstorms before temperatures begin to plummet. By Wednesday night, much of Southeast Texas, including Liberty County, will see temperatures dropping to below freezing.
Forecasts predict Houston will reach lows in the mid-to-upper 20s by Thursday morning, marking the coldest point of this cold snap. The freeze line is expected to reach Houston around midnight Thursday and may not climb above freezing until late Thursday morning. While Houston will likely experience a light freeze, areas north and west of the city could see a hard freeze, with temperatures falling to 24°F or lower.
Friday morning is also expected to bring freezing temperatures, with Houston forecasted to hit a low of 31°F.
Prepare Now: Protect the 4 Ps – People, Pets, Pipes, and Plants
LCOEM is urging residents to take precautions before the cold arrives:
- People: Ensure family members, especially the elderly and those with health conditions, have adequate heating. Check on neighbors and those who may need assistance.
- Pets: Bring pets indoors or provide warm, insulated shelter. Ensure they have access to unfrozen water and extra food.
- Pipes: Wrap exposed pipes, leave indoor faucets dripping, and open cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate around plumbing.
- Plants: Bring sensitive plants inside, or cover them with blankets to protect them from frost.
With freezing temperatures expected to linger, it’s essential to plan ahead and stay informed. Residents can follow the Liberty County Office of Emergency Management for updates and emergency notifications, and keep up with Bluebonnet News for the latest updates.
