Authorities are searching for a suspect who fatally stabbed a man Monday afternoon, Feb. 24, at a property on CR 5740 in the Colony Ridge communities south of Plum Grove.
According to Capt. David Meyers, a spokesperson for the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, the two men apparently got into a verbal disturbance that turned physical, leading one of them to pull out a knife and stab the other.
Both men are Hispanic and are believed to have known each other prior to the incident.
The male suspect fled the scene into a nearby wooded area. Authorities have activated drones to search for him by air and K-9 officers to track him on the ground. A DPS helicopter is also expected to join the manhunt soon, Meyers said.
“The suspect was last seen wearing a white shirt with blue horizontal stripes and blue jeans,” said Meyers. “We believe he lived fairly close to where the fatal stabbing occurred.”
The victim in the stabbing incident is believed to be a Hispanic male around 44 years of age. The age of the suspect has not been determined at this time, Meyers said.
“We are obtaining a search warrant for the travel trailer where the suspect and the victim lived. We believe they might be related and might have lived together, but we haven’t been able to confirm that,” he said.
When asked if the two men are illegal immigrants, Meyers said there is a high likelihood of that being the case, but he cannot confirm it at this time.
Pct. 6 Justice of the Peace Ralph Fuller conducted an inquest at the scene. The Liberty County Sheriff’s Office is being assisted by the Texas Department of Public Safety, Homeland Security and the Texas Rangers.
The Texas Department of Criminal Justice is assisting with tracking dogs and personnel.
