Additional information has surfaced regarding the fatal officer-involved shooting at HCA Kingwood Hospital on the evening of Feb. 24, 2025, identifying the deceased as 34-year-old Jarmar Brooks of Point Blank, Texas.
Through an open records request, Bluebonnet News has obtained the probable cause statement that led to Brooks’ arrest prior to his death while in police custody. The statement details a violent domestic disturbance that unfolded on the night of Feb. 23, resulting in Brooks facing a long list of felony charges, including two counts of Aggravated Assault With a Deadly Weapon, three counts of Child Endangerment, and multiple other offenses.
According to law enforcement records, at approximately 11:12 p.m. on Feb. 23, San Jacinto County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a call regarding a physical disturbance in progress. Brooks’ wife reported that he was physically assaulting her inside their home. She managed to escape with their three children, ages 11, 9, and 7, but Brooks pursued them outside. In a 911 call, Brooks’ wife pleaded for emergency medical services, stating that he was trying to kill her.

The report goes on to say that the situation allegedly began when Brooks’ wife attempted to leave their home with her children, and he grabbed a knife and threatened to kill his wife. Their eldest child reportedly managed to wrestle the knife away and throw it outside. Brooks then attempted to strangle his wife with both hands, inflicting severe injuries, including multiple facial fractures and significant bruising around her neck.
According to the report, the grandson called his grandfather for help and the grandfather arrived to find his son choking his daughter-in-law. The 70-year-old grandfather attempted to intervene, striking his son with a hickory cane in an effort to stop the assault. However, Brooks then turned on his father, attacking him as well.
As the wife and the children sought refuge in their vehicle, Brooks allegedly commandeered his father’s pickup truck without consent and began ramming her car multiple times, with the children still inside with their mother. According to reports, he struck the vehicle multiple times, pushing it sideways within the carport area. The violent assault left one child injured with a large hematoma to the forehead.
The alleged assault ended when Brooks got the truck stuck in the mud while attempting to turn it around. The force of his attempts to move the truck also reportedly led to structural damage to the mobile home, the carport and a nearby power pole. Both vehicles were left inoperable following the incident.
When law enforcement personnel arrived, Brooks reportedly resisted arrest. Officers ultimately subdued him and transported him to HCA Kingwood Hospital for treatment of a head wound sustained when his father struck him in an attempt to protect his daughter-in-law. His wife, suffering from her own injuries, was also taken to the same hospital for medical care.
Fatal Shooting at HCA Kingwood
While under medical observation at HCA Kingwood, Brooks was assigned a guard detail with a San Jacinto County deputy. According to initial reports, Brooks attempted to distract the deputy before engaging in a physical struggle and attempting to grab the officer’s firearm.
Fearing for his life, the deputy reportedly fired three shots—twice in the chest and once in the head—killing Brooks at the scene.
The shooting is currently under investigation by the Houston Police Department, the Texas Rangers and the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office.
San Jacinto County District Attorney Todd Dillon stated that a toxicology screening is being performed on Brooks, as authorities suspect he may have been under the influence of drugs at the time of the initial assault.
