Liberty Police Department is releasing limited information about an incident that occurred March 30 at a home in Liberty, where a woman reportedly died by suicide during a response to a mental health call.
According to initial reports, the woman, who was allegedly experiencing a mental health crisis, became involved in a struggle with officers and reportedly gained control of an officer’s firearm, using it to take her own life. These details have not been officially confirmed by the department.
Liberty Police Chief Rick Ash declined to comment on specifics during a phone call Wednesday, April 2, instead referring all questions to the Texas Rangers, which is now leading the investigation.
In a written statement, the Liberty Police Department confirmed the death but emphasized that the incident does not qualify as an officer-involved shooting.
“On March 30, 2025, the Liberty Police Department responded to a mental health call where the individual involved ultimately passed away after life-saving efforts,” the statement reads. “While this incident is not an officer-involved shooting, we have requested the Texas Rangers to conduct an investigation due to the unusual circumstances surrounding the situation.”
The Texas Rangers typically refer such cases to the District Attorney’s office for review and potential presentation to a grand jury, a step taken to ensure a thorough and impartial review of the facts.
The Texas Municipal Police Association (TMPA) has confirmed that attorneys are representing the officers involved in the incident. No officers were injured.
“TMPA remains committed to supporting our members in the moments that matter most,” the organization stated in a Facebook post regarding the incident.
No further details have been released as the investigation remains ongoing.
