Liberty County fire marshal injured in crash en route to jail fire

Significant damage can be seen to the front passenger side of the pickup used by Liberty County Fire Marshal Nathan Green. The truck was damaged when a wheel assembly from an 18-wheeler came apart and crossed into the path of Green's vehicle as he was driving on the Grand Parkway west of FM 686 in Dayton.

Liberty County Fire Marshal Nathan Green sustained minor injuries Monday night, April 7, when his county-issued truck was struck by debris from an 18-wheeler while he was responding to a fire at the Liberty County Jail.

The crash occurred around 10:30 p.m. on the Grand Parkway (I-99), just west of FM 686 in Dayton. According to Green, a wheel assembly on an 18-wheeler failed, sending metal parts into the path of his vehicle.

With little time to react, Green attempted to swerve to avoid a collision. Despite his efforts, a large brake assembly from the truck hit the front passenger side of his pickup, causing significant damage and rendering the vehicle inoperable.

Green suffered abrasion injuries to his left hand when the airbags deployed. He also had to force his way through curtain airbags, which deploy along the sides of the vehicle during a crash.

The vehicle, a county truck with only 8,000 miles, was recently outfitted with emergency lighting. Green noted the loss of the truck as a setback for the department.

The driver of the 18-wheeler was located and stopped by authorities near FM 1485 in Montgomery County. The incident is under investigation.

  1. So, it’ll be either repaired or replaced and paid for by the semi truck drivers insurance, right? A loaner vehicle should also be supplied.

  2. Looks like new brakes were installed and wheels were over torqued or not torqued enough.. Could be the shops responsibility for damages.
