Texas House passes historic SB 17 to safeguard Texas land, national security

Representative Janis Holt (HD 18) joined Senator Lois Kolkhorst in a press conference on Friday, May 30, at the Texas Capitol to celebrate the passage of Senate Bill 17 (SB17), landmark legislation aimed at protecting Texas land from acquisition by foreign entities deemed a threat to national security.

SB17, which passed both chambers with strong bipartisan support, restricts the purchase or acquisition of real property in Texas by certain foreign governments and entities.

According to the statement from Holt’s office, the bill is a significant step in bolstering homeland security and ensuring that Texas land remains in the hands of those who respect and uphold American values.

“As a proud member of the Homeland Security and Veterans Affairs Committee, I was honored to help shape and advance SB17 through the legislative process,” said Rep. Holt. “This bill is about protecting our sovereignty, our communities, and our veterans. It sends a clear message that Texas will not compromise when it comes to national security.”

Rep. Holt emphasized the importance of vigilance in an increasingly complex global landscape, noting that foreign ownership of strategic land near military bases and critical infrastructure poses a real and growing threat.

“I commend Senator Kolkhorst for her leadership on this issue and thank my colleagues in the House for standing united in defense of Texas,” Holt added. “SB17 is a victory for every Texan who believes in the sanctity of our land and the safety of our people.”

The bill now heads to the Governor’s desk for signature.
