Samuel Earl Alford journeyed to his heavenly home on Saturday, June 28, 2025, at the age of 75, while in the care of Harbor Hospice and residing at Magnolia Place in Liberty, Texas.
Born Sept. 29, 1949, in Liberty, Texas, as one of eight children to Juana Colleen (Padon) Alford and Douglas Mearl Alford, Sam learned responsibility, resourcefulness, and work ethic at an early age. He understood and appreciated the value things held. He was extremely proud of his Native American heritage, descending from Chief Sho-we-tat (Chief George Washington) of The Caddo Nation. He was a member of the Liberty High School class of 1967 and later graduated from the Texas A&M Police Academy.
He was a commissioned peace officer for 37 years. Until he became disabled, he proudly served multiple agencies throughout his law enforcement career including the Liberty Police Department, Dayton Police Department, Liberty County Sheriff’s Department, Liberty County Precinct 3 Constable’s Office, and Port of Houston Authority. Policing was his passion and he developed lifelong friendships with those he served alongside as well as their extended families.
He rarely held only one job at a time and might have been found also working on hot oil trucks, at filling stations, policing road construction jobs, serving as security at The Cadillac Bar, or working the parts counter at International Harvester or Liberty Implement. With a mind for numbers, he often amazed his friends and loved ones by recalling license plate numbers (maybe even yours) from years gone by and parts numbers for any model of John Deere equipment.
He was also an unmatched housekeeper, kept impeccably clean vehicles and, in his younger years, liked to drive fast cars. Western shows and movies were a must. Music was always a mainstay. With a musician as a father, there may have been no escaping that. Never a dancer, he loved to sit around and listen, whether it be live or recorded. He collected a few guitars and tried to pick up playing them himself, but never quite arrived. Instead, he bragged endlessly on, and was maybe a little envious of, his little brother, L.C., who Sam believed could play just about anything. Truth be known, he bragged on all of his family for one reason or another.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents and five siblings: Merrill Lynn Alford Ramos, Robert Douglas Alford, Linda LaRue Alford, Melvin Daniel Alford, and Florence Gail Alford Foxworth.
Sam is survived by the love of his life and wife of nearly 46 years, Barbara Ann (Freeman) Alford of Liberty; his children: Carolyn Lawson (Darrell) of Slidell, LA, Nicki Moss (Wayne) of Batson, Doug Alford (April) of Liberty, and Angela Alford of Baytown; his grandchildren: Justin Peters (Sara Ballesteros), Amber Barber (Jared), Trent Weeks (Danielle Rogers), Megan Karl (Spencer), Lane Alford (Haley), Hunter Alford (Haliey Rollins), Autumn Alford, Rebecca Moss and baby girl Moss on the way; his siblings: L.C. Alford (Lynn) of Liberty, Alma Villarreal of Beaumont, and Vivian Fry (Carl Parker) of Dayton; nieces, nephews, great grandchildren, and a host of friends and other loved ones.
The family invites you to clean your house, take care of your laundry, wash your car, mow your lawn, press your duds, polish your shoes, brush your hair, put on a little foo foo and then join us in celebrating Sam’s home going. Visitation will be held Thursday, July 3, 2025, 10:00 am at Hardin Baptist Church with a memorial service to follow at 11:00 am and officiated by reverends Tony Hines (Hardin Baptist Church), Chris Contreras (New Work Family Worship Center) and Bill Fabriguze.
The family thanks those who have assisted in Sam’s care throughout his final years as well as those who have shown their love to him and each of us in these recent days. May God blanket all of us in His comfort and peace until we’re with Sam again.
