The Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge in Liberty will host its annual Moth Night Out on Saturday, July 19, beginning at 9 p.m., in conjunction with National Moth Week celebrations held nationwide.

The evening event invites nature enthusiasts and curious visitors of all ages to observe and photograph some of the more than 1,100 moth species documented around the refuge headquarters building, located at 601 FM 1011 in Liberty, across from the Sam Houston Regional Library and Research Center.

Participants will have the opportunity to view moths under black lights and mercury vapor lamps set up around the building to attract a variety of species.

The event will also feature a book signing by acclaimed nature photographer Kathy Adams Clark, who will be signing copies of her latest release, Book of Texas Moths. The book will be available for purchase at the event for $42.50, with multiple payment options accepted.

National Moth Week provides a much-needed spotlight on moths and their ecological importance as well as their incredible biodiversity.  National Moth Week offers everyone, everywhere, a unique opportunity to become a Citizen Scientist and contribute scientific data about moths.

Numerous organizations around the world have partnered with National Moth Week and are supporting the event.  Through partnerships with major online biological data depositories, National Moth Week participants can help map moth distribution and provide needed information on other life history aspects around the globe.

Attendees should be prepared for warm, humid conditions and a late-night experience. Families with children are especially encouraged to attend.
