A popular Cleveland, Texas, coffee shop and florist has new owners with plans to build on its community-centered charm while introducing fresh ideas.

David and Valerie Haney of Tarkington recently purchased The Crossing Coffee Shop and Easy Street Florist, located at 125 N. San Jacinto Ave., Cleveland, from longtime owners Tommy and Sharla Bowen. The Bowens, who operated the businesses for several years, said they are stepping away to focus on their real estate ventures.

For the Haneys, the purchase represents both a new chapter and an answered prayer. After years of working in the manufacturing industry for laboratory equipment, the couple had been considering a change. They said they prayed about the decision and looked at other opportunities before learning that the Bowens were ready to sell.

“We’re not planning to change much. The vibe here is the same,” said Valerie Haney. “We just want to bring in some new energy and ideas to help grow the business.”

The Haneys prepared for ownership by attending the Texas Coffee School, where they learned the finer points of grinding beans and brewing coffee. They now plan to add an espresso machine to expand the shop’s offerings.

The Crossing Coffee Shop is more than just a place to grab a drink. Customers can enjoy sandwiches, desserts, and chai tea, or browse through plants, floral arrangements, gifts, candles, and mugs. Inside, comfortable tables make it a popular spot to linger over breakfast or lunch. Easy Street Florist shares the space, offering custom arrangements and a variety of floral designs.

The couple hopes to keep the community spirit that has long defined the shop, while involving their family in daily operations.

“We have our son working here and he’s been doing an amazing job,” said David Haney.

The Haneys said they want the community to know the business is under new management — and that everyone is welcome.

“If you’ve been coming to Easy Street Florist or The Crossing Coffee Shop for years, we’re glad you are here and still with us. If you’ve never been in before, come by and say hi,” Valerie said.

  1. Absolutely loved reading how these guys have welcomed new owners—both local gems that blend warmth, blooms, and community in such a charming way. It feels like that kind of thoughtful tribute would pair beautifully with a box of English muffins from Wolferman’s Bakery —those super-thick, buttery toasts are a perfect breakfast companion when you’re sitting in a cozy café. I know Wolferman’s is known for quality and nostalgia, but I’ve also seen some reviews that mention occasional customer service hiccups. Either way, they bring a sense of comfort—just like our lovely shops do in our neighborhood.
