Abbott orders flags to be lowered to honor Kirk following assassination

Governor Greg Abbott has directed all state government buildings to lower the United States and Texas flags to half-staff, in accordance with President Donald J. Trump’s proclamation honoring the memory of Charlie Kirk.

The Governor released the following statement earlier today after the news of Kirk’s death.

“Cecilia and I are heartbroken by the assassination and passing of Charlie Kirk,” said Governor Abbott. “Charlie’s voice was a beacon for millions of young Americans searching for truth, courage, and conviction. This senseless act of violence has no place in America. Our prayers are with Charlie’s family and his loved ones, especially the two young children he leaves behind. Texas stands with them in mourning and in honoring Charlie’s enduring legacy.”

Kirk, 31, was fatally shot on Wednesday, Sept. 10, while speaking at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. Authorities say the attack appeared to be targeted, though the motive remains under investigation.

The fatal shot, fired from a nearby campus building, struck him in the neck about 20 minutes into his appearance. Emergency responders rushed him to the hospital, but despite lifesaving efforts, he was later pronounced dead.

As the founder of Turning Point USA, Kirk had become one of the nation’s most recognized conservative voices.

His sudden death has left a deep void in political and media circles, sparking tributes from allies and even critics who acknowledged his outsized influence on public discourse and the generations of young people he inspired.

Flags should be returned to full-staff at sunset on Sunday, Sept. 14, 2025.
