Back on top: First Methodist Church of Dayton gets its steeple back

Workers prepare to lift Dayton Methodist Church's steeple into place on Tuesday, Sept. 9.

On Tuesday morning, Sept. 9, the steeple of First Methodist Church of Dayton was lifted back into place atop the sanctuary at 106 South Cleveland St. A familiar landmark in the Dayton skyline, the old steeple was toppled by the powerful winds of Hurricane Beryl in July 2024.

Church leaders say they are humbled by the outpouring of concern and support from the community and are grateful to see the steeple restored. The next step will be reinstalling the chime system that rings hymns daily at noon and 5 p.m.

First Methodist Dayton expressed appreciation to David Hoppes of Sign of the Times for his repair work and to Boss Crane & Rigging for partnering with Hoppes to complete the steeple’s installation.

The steeple is slowly put into place atop First Methodist Church of Dayton on Tuesday, Sept. 9.
