Community gathers for North Liberty County National Night Out

Community members and first responders gather outside Cleveland’s First Baptist Church during the North Liberty County National Night Out, an annual event promoting safety, unity and neighborhood spirit.

The North Liberty County National Night Out was held Thursday, Oct. 2, at Cleveland’s First Baptist Church, 300 W. Hanson St. The free community event, which ran from 6 to 8 p.m., brought together families, first responders and local organizations for an evening focused on unity, safety and community spirit.

National Night Out is an annual campaign that promotes strong relationships between law enforcement and the communities they serve. Across the country, residents gather to meet their local officers, enjoy activities and strengthen neighborhood ties.

This year’s event featured free food, children’s activities and community resource booths. Agencies in attendance included the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, Cleveland Police Department, Cleveland ISD Police Department, Cleveland Fire Department and the Liberty County Precinct 6 Constable’s Office.

Sgt. Randall Walter, with the Pct. 6 Constable’s Office, presented awards recognizing outstanding service and contributions from local law enforcement, educators and community members.

Distinguished Service Award

  • Sgt. Paul Young and K9 Rita, Liberty County Sheriff’s Office Interdiction Unit
  • Deputy Josh Ingram and K9 Rico, Liberty County Sheriff’s Office Interdiction Unit
  • Deputy John Zepeda and K9 Sasha, Liberty County Sheriff’s Office Interdiction Unit and Liberty County Constable Pct. 5
  • Officer Gilbert Vasquez, Oak Ridge Police Department (school resource officer at ILTexas Liberty High School/MSG Ramirez Campus)
  • Cpl. Romona Campbell, Oak Ridge Police Department (school resource officer at ILTexas Liberty High School/MSG Ramirez Campus)

Meritorious Service Award

Lifesaving Award

Community Service Award

Community Caretaker Award

  • Pct. 6 Constable Zack Harkness

Constable Harkness expressed his appreciation for the community’s involvement in the annual event.

“This year’s large turnout of local businesses, non-profits, and organizations helped make it one of the best yet,” said Harkness. “When law enforcement, firefighters, and neighbors come together here in Cleveland, it strengthens the trust and relationships that keep our community safe. We’re grateful for everyone who took part and already look forward to making next year’s event even better.”

Sgt. Walter also emphasized teamwork and unity among local agencies.

“Our office looks forward to National Night Out every year,” Walter said. “We start planning months in advance so we can make it a safe and fun experience for everyone. We love giving back to the community that is so supportive of us. We embody the term teamwork. That’s also why we recognize other first responders at this event. We believe in unity between all agencies and recognizing everyone’s moments of success. If you haven’t ever come to one of these events, I urge you to do so. Meet your community and get to know your neighbors.”
