One killed in head-on crash north of Moss Hill

A head-on collision on SH 146 north of Moss Hill claimed the life of a 70-year-old Huntsville man around noon Monday, Nov. 3.

According to Sgt. Rob Willoughby, supervisor for the Texas Department of Public Safety office in Liberty, a 2014 Hyundai Sonata was traveling northbound on SH 146 near County Road 2136 when the driver attempted to pass another vehicle in an unsafe manner.

The Hyundai failed to return to its lane and struck a southbound 2000 Peterbilt truck pulling a semi-trailer head-on.

The driver of the Hyundai, Larry Gaylord, was flown by air ambulance to HCA Kingwood Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

The driver of the Peterbilt, identified as 30-year-old Joseph Allen Smith Jr., of Saratoga, was not injured.

The crash was investigated by Trooper Jacques Nguyen, assisted by Troopers Grant Nickle, Corey Prantil, and Jonathon Ramseur.

The roadway was closed while troopers investigated and the wreckage was cleared.
