Monty Glen Upton, 81, of Hardin, Texas, passed away on Nov. 30, 2025. He was born on April 3, 1944, in Hereford, Texas, to Marvel Glen and Viva May Upton.
Monty lived a life full of passion and creativity, though he would argue that he was just a simple man. He dedicated his professional life to teaching math and serving as a principal at both Hardin Junior High and Hardin Elementary. Many in this community likely still remember learning to love, or at least tolerate, math because of him! He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and spending time outdoors in God’s creation. A talented artist, Monty loved painting scenes of wildlife and nature and even sold a painting or two in his lifetime. He also had a keen interest in taxidermy and often filled the freezer with projects he was working on. Some of that work can still be seen in the home he shared with his wife. His love for the great outdoors was matched by his devotion to his faith—he taught the same Sunday school class for over 30 years at Hardin Baptist Church, touching countless lives with his wisdom, kindness, and love for people.
Above all, Monty cherished his family. He found joy in playing with and telling stories to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren–stories his children also heard growing up. These memories and more will be treasured forever.
Monty is preceded in death by his parents, Marvel and Viva Upton, and a brother, Paul. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Rita Upton; his children, Jana Barrett and her husband Chad, and Matthew Upton and his wife Maria; and 5 grandsons and 3 great-grandchildren who will continue to honor his legacy. He is also survived by his sister, Marvella Thompson and her husband Glen; another sister, Brenda Holcomb; and a brother, Robert Upton.
Monty is remembered for his ability to capture the hearts and minds of those around him with his keen sense of humor to convey his love of life through his gift for storytelling. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
