Janie Arias Cruz

Janie Arias Cruz, age 72, went home to God on Jan. 8, 2026, surrounded by her family in her final moments. Born on April 21, 1953, in Sugar Land, Texas, Janie was the beloved first-born child of Domingo Arias and Sanina Rodriguez Garcia.

As a preteen, Janie stepped into a motherly role for her siblings, a testament to her nurturing spirit that defined her entire life. At 16, she met Isabel “Bunior” Cruz. After a sweet courtship, they were married on May 5, 1971.

Janie and Isabel quickly grew their family, welcoming four beautiful daughters and a son. A deeply devoted wife and mother, Janie was an altruistic homemaker while Isabel worked to provide for the family. Together for nearly 50 years, they raised five children, two honorary children, 16 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Their home was a place of welcome for all, built on a foundation of giving. Following Isabel’s passing from brain cancer in May 2015, Janie faced the difficult journey of navigating the life they had built together without the love of her life by her side.

In time, Janie embraced life in new ways. She moved to the countryside in Dayton, Texas, where her days were filled with family visits, grandchildren mowing her grass, and backyard volleyball matches. she also discovered a love for travel, creating lasting memories with her sisters and her many descendants.

In 2019, Janie found companionship with Carlos Cisneros. They moved to Humble, Texas, and solidified their union in marriage in December 2020, sharing their lives together until her passing.

A devoted wife and homemaker, Janie always made her home and family her priority. She loved cooking for others, and her potato and egg salad became Cruz family staples—recipes that her children will proudly carry on. She found joy in the simple things: a passion for coloring, finding a bargain at the thrift store (especially on Tuesday senior days at Goodwill), and listening to music. Her favorites ranged from The Beatles to Chris Brown, and she held a special place in her heart for “To Sir With Love” by Lulu.

Towards the end of her life, Janie—a mother, sister, grandmother, wife, and great-grandmother—found deep fulfillment in her many roles. Her last days were filled with laughter, joy, and the countless memories she now carries with her to heaven. Our Janie is a star that shines forevermore in the Cruz family, and we will forever hold true the lessons, wisdom, and strength she instilled in us all.

Janie is survived by her husband, Carlos Cisneros; her five children: Catherine Gibson (Andra), Melissa Applewhite (Paul), Natalie Cruz (David Stewart), Nicole Wilson (James), and Rudy Cruz (Paviella); and her honorary children, Josie Perez (Daniel) and Jason Arias.

She leaves behind her siblings: Mary Arias, Domingo Arias Jr., Rita Ferrel, Steven Arias, Gilbert Arias, Manuel Arias, Pablo Garcia, and JC Garcia.

Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Brittany Jones, Allen Collette, Derrick Applewhite, Matthew Cruz, Sydney Applewhite, Sean Stewart, Dylan Stewart, Jordan Stewart, Joshua Stewart, Jasmine Gibson, Ashley Cruz, and Brendan Cruz; and her great-grandchildren: Martin Collette, Isabel Collette, Ian Jones, Madeleine Jones, Elizabeth Collette, Meredith Jones, Miriam Jones, and Allen Collette Jr.
