TxDOT begins winter storm preparations

Salt trucks and spray rigs rolled out early Thursday, 22, as the Texas Department of Transportation’s Beaumont District began pre-treating roads and bridges ahead of a forecasted winter storm, urging drivers to slow down and give crews room to work.

TxDOT officials remind motorists that while crews are working to keep roadways as safe as possible, winter weather creates unpredictable and dangerous driving conditions, and drivers play a critical role in staying safe.

Motorists are asked to reduce speed and provide ample space when approaching TxDOT vehicles operating on roadways.

Travel during winter weather is strongly discouraged. If travel is unavoidable, drivers are urged to plan ahead by monitoring local weather forecasts and checking current road conditions and closures at DriveTexas.org.

TxDOT offered the following winter driving safety tips for motorists who must be on the road:

• Reduce speed and increase following distance.
• Plan ahead and allow plenty of extra time to reach your destination.
• Remember that everyone on the road is dealing with the same conditions and be courteous so all drivers can safely reach their destinations.
• Carry an emergency kit in your vehicle, including items such as food, water and a blanket, in case you become stranded.
