On April 3, 1934, in Westlake, La., God blessed Ernest Brew Edwards and Virginia Brown Edwards with a beautiful baby girl named Betty. She was affectionately nicknamed “Teddy” by her Aunt Addie. Shortly after her birth, Betty returned with her family to the oil fields of Liberty, Texas.
She grew up loving country life—running through the oil fields, fishing, swimming, and working alongside her father as they farmed the land. Those early years shaped her strong work ethic, resilience, and deep appreciation for family and faith. During her childhood, Betty was an active member of Lily of the Valley Baptist Church under its founding pastor, Reverend Humphrey.
At the young age of nine, she faithfully served the church alongside her cousin, Betty Louise, affectionately known as “Tit.” One of their responsibilities was caring for the pastor’s quarters—ensuring the room was clean and that the bed and linens were fresh and neatly prepared. It was also during this time that Betty was baptized by Reverend Humphrey in a lake located in the oil field known as “The Dump.”
As Betty grew older, she attended Liberty Training High School, where she developed lifelong friendships and a strong work ethic that carried her throughout her life. She enjoyed an active childhood, playing basketball and various other sports, which helped build her competitive spirit and teamwork skills.
Under the loving guidance of her Aunt Addie, Betty helped form the Lily of the Valley Singers. She sang alongside her cousins—James Ector (“Bubba”), Jean Jordan, Mae Etta Hebert, and Betty Louise. Together, they traveled by train from Liberty, Texas, to churches throughout Louisiana, lifting their voices in song and spreading joy wherever they went. These experiences nurtured Betty’s lifelong love for music, service, and faith.
While visiting her grandmother in Westlake, Betty met Joseph Robinson Jr., a devoted and loving father to their eight children. They were married on Nov. 26, 1949, and moved to Sulphur, La., where they began their family together. Betty and Joseph were blessed with eight children: Doris Robinson, Betty Robinson, Charles Anthony Robinson, Oscar Ray Robinson, Gwendolyn Robinson, Joanne Robinson, Allen Wayne Robinson, and Ernest Lee Robinson. God later enlarged Betty’s territory and moved her back to Texas, to Sawmill Road, Mitchell Street, where she reunited with her mother. It was there that she met the love of her life, Harvey Johnson, at the Hollywood Café, locally known as “Blackjack.”
They were married by Paul Jones on July 6, 1982, and soon moved around the corner on Sawmill Road, where they finished raising their family. From this union came Shirley Johnson Wyatt. Betty and Harvey became a devoted team. She worked briefly at the Rainbow Café and Yeti Kirsten Hospital, but ultimately became a full-time homemaker, while Harvey worked as a cross-country truck driver. Together, they faithfully served in their church. With her beautiful voice, Betty sang in the choir and served in many roles, including mission sister, deaconess, instrumental in church fundraising efforts, and pastor’s aide. Betty and Harvey later moved their membership to Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church under Reverend L.C. Spikes, who ordained her as deaconess.
While there, Teddy and Tit formed the Family Spiritualettes, which included her daughters Doris and Betty, cousin Sharon Haley, Karen Barret Singleton, and Phyllis Swift. They traveled extensively spreading the song of faith and were honored by the Mayor of Liberty, who proclaimed Family Spiritualettes Day in 1999. In her later years, Betty faithfully served at Turkey Creek Baptist Church, under Reverend Paul Edwards Cross, and later Reverend Terrence Edwards, until her passing. Betty passed peacefully at her home on January 17, 2026, surrounded by her beloved husband and family.
