Liberty County officials are urging residents to stay informed and take precautions as Winter Storm Fern is expected to bring icy conditions and dangerously cold temperatures to the area this weekend.
In a video shared online through the Bluebonnet News YouTube channel, AJ Johnson, director of the Liberty County Office of Emergency Management, and Precinct 4 Commissioner Gerald Kolarik discuss emergency preparations underway ahead of the ice storm forecast for Saturday and Sunday. The two outline steps being taken by the county, what residents can expect and how to prepare for hazardous winter weather.
During the discussion, officials also share information about warming shelters that will be available to residents if needed. Four warming shelters have been identified across Liberty County: the Dayton Police Department, 2004 N. Cleveland St. in Dayton; VFW Post 5621, 1520 N. Main St. in Liberty; Calvary Baptist Church, 816 N. Blair in Cleveland; and the Santa Fe Administration and Activities Building, 1680 County Road 3549 in Cleveland. Officials noted the Santa Fe location will open only if power outages occur in the area.
Residents are encouraged to ensure they have enough food and water to last at least 72 hours and to take care of the “Four Ps” of cold weather preparedness — people, pipes, plants and pets. Officials emphasized that shelter should be provided for all dogs and cats, as the storm is anticipated to be significant, with temperatures expected to drop into the teens.
County leaders encourage residents to watch the video to hear directly from local officials about preparedness efforts, shelter availability and safety tips as conditions continue to develop.
