A Historic First: Splendora’s Shumate accepted to West Point

Isaac Shumate made history by being the first Splendora ISD student to be accepted into the United States Military Academy at West Point.

Splendora ISD is proud to celebrate a historic milestone as senior Isaac Shumate becomes the first student from our district to be accepted into the United States Military Academy at West Point.

A high-achieving student and natural leader, Isaac will graduate with both his high school diploma and an associate degree from Lone Star College, earned through years of dual-credit coursework.

Known for his strong work ethic and quiet determination, Isaac has consistently challenged himself academically and athletically while encouraging others to rise alongside him.

On the field, Isaac served as a team captain and earned Second Team All-District honors as a linebacker throughout his high school career. Even after a torn ACL interrupted his senior season, his leadership never wavered. He also qualified for regional track competition during his sophomore and junior years.

Isaac credits his leadership growth to lessons learned through sports, family, and perseverance—especially during years when his team faced frequent coaching changes.

“I felt a responsibility to step up and be someone my teammates could rely on,” he shared.

After completing a rigorous nomination process that included essays, recommendations, and interviews, Isaac earned the opportunity to attend West Point, where he will pursue both his education and his dream of playing college football, while preparing to serve as a U.S. Army officer.

Supported by proud parents George and Shannon Shumate, Isaac now prepares for his next chapter. His journey reflects the values of discipline, resilience, and service—and serves as an inspiration to students across Splendora ISD
